why does my cat pause before walking through a door?

We've all sat through it.

We open the door — and our cat stands at the threshold. Looking in, then looking out. Sniffing the air. Taking their time.

Eventually, they make that first step — and then rush through.

A cat is both predator and prey, and their instincts still tell them to check an area before entering it. Even if they've been through that doorway a hundred times, something might have changed.

That pause gives them time to look, listen and smell before committing to entering.

Give them that moment.
Let their instincts play out.
Don't rush them.
